I see. It just seems HIGHLY unlikely that a character would be online when the person wasn't..acting all crazy like.
.hack anyone?

Sorin, I have thought hack, but that isn't my first thought. My thought is this - if the guild list/friends list is screwy then perhaps it is possible that the server has not registered the disconnect properly. No I did not stick around 10 minutes to find out.
How I came to this conclusion rather than hack -
Said player, logs on for about 30 minutes before going to work.
Said player was seen in a town where I would expect to see them during those 30 mins before they headed off to work.
I am not sure that it is possible for said player to log in from work - hence my conclusion of not actually being online.

Just received that wonky update here in SoCal. Decided to not log in. Update took longer than usual as it seemed as if it got stuck at one point while downloading/decompressing.
No third party anything here. Was just using IE at the time.

I had the same thing twice. Once on Saturday, the other one a few hours ago. Stuck at downloading/decompressing but according to my firewall the download was about 3mb's. The application changes prompting for another download, a smaller one. Firewall detects another application change, patcher loads to 100% just like normal. I log in, all my characters are normal, nothing abnormal going on. I would say the problem is on the patcher server...

There's no reason not to login, it is pretty impossible for someone to do something that would ruin your account through their update server.

Tbh it sounds like their server is on the fritz. I would think that it would take a lot of effort to hack the update server, and setup a new patch which diverts account information - which is what some people seem to be suggesting here.
If you don't touch dodgy software, have a firewall, antivirus (and scan for malicious software frequently), and you use different email addresses for your forum, game, support, and whatever accounts, then you should be fairly safe.

I fired up GW on my other computer (laptop this time) and it did not prompt to download anything. I guess it happens at random? Funny thing is that my laptop is the one without any virus protection.
I guess you're right, it's on the server side. Thanks for bringing out the paranoia in me, ArenaNet.

I have 2 computers I regularly play guild wars on swapping around which logs into which of my 2 accounts depending on what I'm doing. One computer runs Vista 64 and is my all around email/web browsing computer. The other runs XP and is only used for gaming. So that's my setup, with that out of the way...
I can't remember whether I saw an update or not. But yesterday, when I first tried to log in, which was either the late am or early pm, I had a weird problem.
Specifically the login screen on both computers would not accept more than 8 characters in the password field. At first I thought maybe they'd done something to restrict password length(it's happened to me on web sites before). But I waited a bit, killed and restarted the clients and it started working normally again.
Before it started working, I tried swapping the accounts around, and still ran into the 8 character limit. Specifically it would just stop taking input after the 8th * appeared. Hitting, backspace would drop it back to 7 *s.
I have no clue what caused it, the only thing I can think of on my end is some weird hiccup with synergy(software used to share keyboard/mouse between computers). But I'd guess it was the login servers, or some problem with communicating with them. Maybe the client defaults to 8 character passwords if it doesn't receive some configuration data from the server.
Hope this helps.

I had like 12 hours ago some terrible lag while monking in gvg (first a very fast dc, and reconnect) then a longer one, i kept hearing vent but gw just stopped like err 7, i had to take out the network cable and then i could reconnect (i did put it in again after :P) then i had another dc. A few days ago i also had this laggy thing of 4 secs good ping then a ping of 2000 then again and again.
Didn't have an update though.

I had the update twice 2 days ago, loaded to 100% each time. Still have got all my gear and characters up to this day. Had some terrible lag last night though ( ~12 hours ago ).
I dont use texmod, or any other dodgy program. Perhaps itunes or IE2 but other than that, I'm clean
Imo, it's just the Anet servers acting up, no biggie, the people that got their accounts hacked, well that's a shame, but I don't think this "update" is the reason. Let's just wait and see untill Anet finds out the problem and lets not jump to any conclusions... Yet.

I've had this 'update' happen 3 times since early saturday morning, every time while experiencing massive (50,000 ping!) lag and all kinds of other probably lag-related oddities. (Like, the guild roster showing me logged on with the wrong character name, appearing to have no guild at all, etc.)

I think I got that a couple of days ago...
It "decompressed" one file several times over before it finally loaded GW.
That being said, I never had this "ghost update" last night unlike most of my Alliance members.

Same sort of thing here. Last couple of days, think first might have been late Saturday night or early Sunday. After the "update" login is noticeably hangy, but no actual login error displayed.
